Mt. Athos

Mount Athos is a mountain in Greece that hosts 20 Orthodox Christian monasteries. It is an autonomous area within Greece, where only males are allowed to enter and live. It dates back to the Byzantine era, and today, more than two thousand monks from Greece and many other countries live there an ascetic life. Besides the precious relics of numerous saints, each monastery also has treasures from past centuries such as artifacts, documents, books, and artworks. Mt. Athos is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
