Another look from above

by Vanna Petry

On my long air trips to the Orient, I often lifted my thoughts to the world as I saw it from above.  One of my old favorite songs said,”….the houses look like matchboxes, people look like ants…” As the plane gained more distance, the views resembled a painting while eventually disappearing in the clouds… Escaping our earthly activities, flying transported my thoughts as a traveler in time, wondering why we had to reach a certain height to gain a shorter distance to our destination? Which way did the winds blow, why take longer to travel East than west, where did hour 0:00 begin and end?  I was going to the other side of the globe from the US – 12 hours difference from New York… How ingenious are the human minds to give us those answers! I thought about the problems I faced in my life and if other people faced similar issues… I thought about differences in cultures… I thought about God…

It all seemed so much clearer from above! I concluded we are all one… divided by time zones, by our history and culture, by our physical attributes… We are God’s favorite creation- gifted with a free will.  Our differences, brought about by ignorance, ungratefulness, greed and selfishness. Our individual choices for survival have an impact not just on ourselves but to all around us… we are linked by a chain that can never be broken. Let’s celebrate that. We are all one! Let’s give one another courage, hope and love on this journey of life…
